Xealth – A Platform for Digital Health

The use of digital therapeutics and remote patient monitoring is accelerating as they help fill an integral role in extending care options for patients. In one study by Juniper Research, the prediction is that the number of people using digital therapeutics and wellness apps will continue to grow from 627 million in 2020 to more than 1.4 billion in 2025.

Xealth’s platform enables physicians and care teams to order and monitor digital tools easily. The organization works to integrate, deploy and measure solutions for health systems from a wide variety of digital health providers and vendors, from patient education content vendors to chronic care and disease-specific apps to products and services for the patient. These tools can be ordered, distributed, or monitored via Xealth in various ways, depending on what is best to drive activation and engagement with each solution. The Xealth platform delivers centralized integration, prescribing, monitoring, and governance for digital health tools from current clinician workflows, demonstrating a 50-80 percent reduction in integration and deployment costs and substantial patient engagement with digital assets.

The Xealth platform has three interdependent modules:

  • Clinical Interface: Digital health is ordered, delivered, and monitored from within the EHR.
  • Digital Command Center: Care teams and physician leadership can see the effects of more engaged patients while measuring outcomes and effectiveness of different prescribed content, apps, services, and connected medical devices across the entire system.
  • Integration Layer: The technology that supports the organization and deployment of multiple solutions through a single integration and clinical decision support engine, powering a health system’s digital vendor ecosystem.

Digital Health At Scale

Change has long been a constant in healthcare, but it has dramatically accelerated in recent years. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, consumer interest in using digital solutions to engage with their healthcare team increased. As digital technologies become more of the norm in healthcare, there’s an opportunity to rethink how to do healthcare by embedding the changes that have worked well during the pandemic.

The Xealth digital health platform enables clinicians to integrate, prescribe and monitor digital health tools for patients to drive engagement and utilization. Through the secure Xealth platform, clinicians can find and order the right digital health tools and programs for patients directly from the EHR workflow, send these digital health orders to the patient’s email or patient portal, and monitor activity.

Tightly integrated with electronic health records (EHRs), the platform supports care teams to personalize digital solution ordering with one click and helps to elevate the patient experience. Patients can be enrolled in beneficial programs and share information directly with care providers through the EHR. Hospitals and providers can also leverage intelligent automation and gain insight into how each tool performs with patients.

Xealth’s Foundation and Investors

Spun out from Providence in 2017, Xealth has backing from 15 health systems and full integrations with the most prominent EHR vendors. Additional investors include Cerner, LRV Health, Threshold Ventures, McKesson Ventures, Novartis, Philips, and ResMed. The Health Management Academy, which brings leading health systems and industry partners together to address the industry’s most significant opportunities, helped initiate this round. Collectively with its members, The Academy identified Xealth as a vital digital health solution, creating a network effect that would benefit multiple members.

Advocate Aurora Enterprises, a subsidiary of Advocate Aurora Health, led Xealth’s Series B round with seven other health systems — Banner Health, ChristianaCare, Cone Health, Memorial Hermann, Nebraska Medicine, Novant Health, and Stanford Health Care — joining the mix. Existing health system investors Atrium Health, Cleveland Clinic, Froedtert & MCW Health Network, MemorialCare Innovation Fund, Providence, and UPMC also contributed to Xealth’s Series B, bringing the company’s total funding to date to $52.6 million.

The Continued Adoption of Digital Solutions

Digital health tools that facilitate innovative methods and modalities to improve care, enable lifestyle change, and create efficiencies are progressing quickly. As patients/consumers continue to adopt digital tools, healthcare organizations are rapidly leveraging these technologies to improve care and the patient experience. Healthcare providers deserve technology that lets them focus on what matters: patient care. And consumers deserve technologies that are as passive as possible. The key to successful behavior change is developing habits that make change more natural. However, digital is not only a channel or a medium – it’s a behavior and an expectation, and its power and impact are unmistakable.
