HPE Survey Overview: How technology will shape patient care and improve outcomes

Digital is becoming so intertwined with health care that it’s now to be expected by consumers. As global healthcare teams continue to adjust to a digital-first future for delivering patient care, they’re also continuously under pressure to provide convenient access to care for patients while tightly managing operational costs. Widespread technology adoption is changing how medicine works, from healthcare techniques to the patient-user experience. According to the announcement, market research firm Vanson Bourne conducted the HPE-sponsored survey to analyze respondents’ perceptions of how the pandemic has influenced technology in their healthcare organization. The survey reviews opportunities and challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic, artificial intelligence (AI), edge technologies, hybrid cloud, machine learning (ML), and telehealth. Findings suggest an increased focus and investment in digital health solutions that can ensure agility and flexibility in the ways they deliver quality patient care at scale, regardless of where the providers and patients reside.

The HPE healthcare survey is a 57-page report revealing the technologies impacting medical care in the short-term and not-too-distant future. Topics covered:

  • Technology that’s improving all aspects of patient care
  • Reduced patient costs
  • Improved security for information and devices
  • Smart medical spaces
  • Prescriptions that include food
  • Integration of personal devices into healthcare

The Future of Medicine – HPE Healthcare Survey Overview

  • Medicine depends on technology to improve the future: Technology enhances all aspects of patient care with specialized tools and better and faster analytics, reducing workloads and improving outcomes.
  • Analytics leads the way to cost reduction: Improvements ranging from better facility management to more efficient supply chain operations result in reduced costs to patients.
  • New tech demands new security: With medical IoT becoming commonplace, the security-first model becomes primary. A fully integrated security model needs to be deployed, with today’s average hospital bed hosting more than a dozen IoT devices.
  • Medical facilities are getting smarter: Real-time digital integration, hospital-wide AIs, and smart medical facilities work together to improve patient results.
  • You are what you eat: Prescription food combined with integrated personal devices will significantly impact patient healthcare.
  • Healthcare’s future is digital: New technologies will integrate wearable devices into patients’ healthcare, streamline and improve processes, and cut waste-reducing costs, improving care, and creating happier and healthier patients.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has a strong reach and can magnify the reach of care by integrating health data across platforms. The 2020 Accenture healthcare AI report found that essential clinical health AI applications can potentially create $150 billion in annual savings for the US healthcare economy by 2026. These cost savings potential is one reason why healthcare organizations will continue to invest in digital solutions to deliver new sources of value over the foreseeable future; whether its to lower the cost of care, improve labor productivity, enable better patient/customer experiences, or another desired outcome.

As medical technology becomes more patient-centric, outcomes are likely to improve. The digitalization of healthcare is providing a better healthcare delivery experience for both patients and clinicians. Healthcare providers can let technology melt into the background while treating patients with the proper protocols in place. The HPE survey illustrates the increased value of breakthrough edge technologies in the past year, with 82% of ITDMs believing connected medical devices are one of the technologies that will have the most significant impact on their organization in the next five years. A further 55% say remote working has become more critical to their organization’s IT department in 12 months. This demonstrates the importance of a fast, efficient edge network where the delivery of quality patient care remains the top priority.

Key Findings – HPE Healthcare Survey

  • 79% of IT Decision Makers (ITDMs) say delivering better clinical outcomes (genomics, patterns, medical imagining analysis, etc., via massive amounts of data being collected) is one of the most critical outcomes in deploying AI or ML in their organization
  • 53% of ITDMs said IT skills is a crucial enabler of innovation in their organization
  • 61% of ITDMs cite better data security as a critical benefit of investing in edge technologies
  • Just 5% of ITDM respondents said the pandemic had no long-term impact on their organization’s digital transformation.

“The survey results indicate healthcare’s interest in deploying AI to deliver better clinical outcomes. Carestream has been a leader in leveraging powerful AI technology to help improve image quality, optimize dose and increase workflow efficiency in medical imaging. Now we are accelerating the pace of our development by providing our industry-leading medical imaging scientists with the optimal AI platform/framework for their research. Our partnership with HPE and their industry leadership with HPE GreenLake Cloud Services gives us the framework to support the operationalization of AI to deliver more solutions that can help improve diagnosis and patient care.” – Dharmendu Damany, Chief Technology Officer at Carestream

Digital Solutions of Tomorrow

Change has long been a constant in healthcare, but it has dramatically accelerated in recent years. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, consumer interest in using digital solutions to engage with their healthcare team was rising. As digital technologies become more of the norm in healthcare, there’s an opportunity to rethink how to do healthcare by embedding the changes that have worked well during the pandemic. Currently, numerous healthcare organizations operate in an edge-to-cloud world. Many have determined their applications and workloads must remain on-premises or at the edge due to cost, compliance, control, latency, security, and compliance considerations.

Digital health tools that facilitate innovative methods and modalities to improve care, enable lifestyle change, and create efficiencies are progressing quickly. According to the HPE healthcare survey, 72% of ITDMs cited IT security as the primary concern when moving all of their organization’s data to the public cloud. 58% cited data egress costs – the charges associated with moving data out of the cloud – as one of the essential factors in deciding where to store data. As a result, almost two-thirds (61%) of ITDMs say they’re pursuing a hybrid cloud strategy.

  • To keep up with the pace of change, 85% of IT decision makers (ITDMs) say IT modernization is one of the biggest drivers when investing in their IT environments
  • More than 80% of ITDMs believe connected medical devices will have a significant impact on their organization in the next five years
  • 61% of ITDMs say they are pursuing a hybrid cloud strategy, and 58% cited data egress costs as one of the most essential factors in deciding where to store data
